The 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals is a 10-player round-robin taking place from September 25 to October 4 on chess24, with World Champion Magnus Carlsen, World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Dutch no. 1 Anish Giri playing from a venue in Oslo. The players start with bonus points based on their performance over the $1.6 million tour so far and then play a match each day for a maximum of 3 points. The top scorer after 9 rounds wins $100,000 and is crowned the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour champion.
Each match features four rapid games with a time control of 15 minutes for all moves plus a 10-second increment added each move. The winner gets 3 points and the loser 0. If tied 2:2, then a blitz playoff is played, with two games where the players have 5 minutes and a 3-second increment. If still tied they play a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. The winner after a playoff gets 2 points, the loser 1.

@Your Cousin Anish reigns because he is forced to take the new queen with his rook and Magnus would take that rook with a bishop who is protected.
In other words Anish is down to 2 pieces and has no chance

@rahman maman c4 takes rook after defense there magnus has defended puts King in check and also King is checkmate

    • Pete C
      Pete C Hace 3 meses

@Your Cousin Anish will have to take with his rook, and he will lose the rook bc magnus is protecting the bishop with the white rook. So magnus will have two knights, a bishop a rook and a pawn against one queen. It’s really impossible for anish to win

imagine showing this game with all its piece coordination to a romantic era champion like Morphy or Anderssen, and then letting them know it was played at blitz controls. Magnus gives a masterclass at impossible speed

@Kokomiyah It is pretty obvious they would get crushed, currently GMs train with module, so they are not even using their own ideas most of the time. Old players did not have this advantage and it is completely game changing, most likely with the same tools, they would have been able to be in the top 100 easily.

Broke 2 rules: don't botez gambit and don't play a modified bongcloud opening

    • David Cline
      David Cline Hace 11 días

@Chicken man Then you dont understand my point at all, insofar as there are "rules" to chess, and it sounds like you are disputing that there even are such things, then Magnus breaks quite a few of them here. Of course, at a high enough level, every rule for every discipline can be broken. But that is precisely the evidence of the greatness of the player who is breaking the rules; it doesn't indicate that for most people, those rules do not apply.

    • Chicken man
      Chicken man Hace 11 días

@David Cline the bringing the queen out early is not a “rule” of chess, at all. This was well known theory, mainly this “rule” is mainly said by chess ESclipsrs who are advertising to newer players.

    • T Alex
      T Alex Hace 13 días +1

@David Cline I agree, also the development of his rooks clearly breaks the “rules”. Rook A5 to control the board horizontally? Are you serious? How often do you EVER see that? But here it’s used so effectively: the rook defends Magnus’ f pawn which forces Giri to overextend his pawn structure to threaten Magnus’ rook. After that, it’s all Magnus. Magnus gets that DISGUSTING structure of pawns, knights, a bishop, and a rook somehow all defending each other so beautifully. It really was a wonderful game.

@Uska Qais It would've guaranteed a mate after the promotion.

  • dm9910
    dm9910 Hace 10 meses +548

One of the things that's so striking about Magnus on defense is how willing he is to play ugly moves when necessary to hold his position together, and somehow untangle later . For a short while it seemed like Giri was piling on the pressure and forcing some concessions and it was hard to see how Magnus would get coordinated. Yet a few moves later Giri's initiative had completely evaporated and his heavy pieces were unable to make a credible threat. And of course that's the quintessential Magnus style, but to see him pull it off against a 2700 in Blitz time control is something else.

This is why many players who early attack with the queen lose, because they dont get to attack the queen or eat anything valuable, while their queen gets all the time threathen and so they dont want to lose their queen, so keep moving it, while the other player just keeps developing his pieces to get big advantage, when the other player wasted so many turns with moving his queen around trying to attack and get through.

The queen is the most valuable piece being abel to do most in the board, but when the queen is not abel to attack the king without getting sacrofaced herself. The queen becomes very wortheles piece in the chess game.

This was defintiely one of the better games I have seen in a while. Queen sacrifices which are equal in material AREN'T bad but it's always a mental danger to do at such high level as 3 pieces can easier make a mistake than 1 piece. Yet, MC has the confidence (and ability of course) to do it at this level and hence why it looks so nice. Very well played! :p

Yes this is why chess is so complicated game and its very hard to master chess, when it got so many angels to look at the game and so many ways to analize, when you dont exactly know always what your opponent will do. Your pieces can be very well connected to be also connected, when you do make an attack and so its complicated in chess where to find the best move in your position where ever piece are defending eachother.

@Mundo De Possibilidades Giri goes wrong already at move 11, moving his pawn to e5 and helping the bad knight on d6 to a better square. Problem seems that Giri couldn't adjust to playing with this material imbalance. Anyhow, it was a blitz game and that's the only reason we are seing this exchange of pieces by Magnus. 3 pieces for a queen is generally ok, but the black pieces are in a bad shape when they enter this.

@Mundo De Possibilidades Actually it's not incredible, it's actually the opposite, it makes perfect sense. The sacrifice is not exactly sound, and ends up with a poor, uncoordinated position. In classical time control, he would surely lose to any top GM. But in blitz it's hard to find the right way to punish the position and wild sacrifices work much better than they should.

I love that Queen sac. Although it's not really a true sacrifice the material exchange is even. I love the three pieces and how well he coordinated those pieces. He made music with those pieces!!
What truly made this beautiful was how Magnus sacked the pawns on b6 and e5 to open up the position better with for knight and bishop fully understanding he could gang up on the weak white pawns with all those minor pieces. Just beautiful to see!
At 7:28 Bc8 locked out all white major pieces.
    Elegant play!!

I'm not very good at chess and neither is the one friend I have that I play with, but I do believe that black is almost always in a better situation to sac the queen. Depending on the board state, the queen can be a really good front. Something most players assume they have to capture asap.
If used wisely the queen sac can gain black an extra positioning turn to make up for going second
