“It’s not just about socialism, it’s epic mismanagement”
No dumbshit, it’s epically mismanaged BECAUSE it IS socialism. There are no corrective measures and signals that punishes failure.
It’s called ECONOMICS, where you ECONOMIZE (cut off the parts that are not needed or aren’t working). Without signals and feed back economics break down. That’s the issue.
Read Economic Calculation in a Socialist Commonwealth.

Venezuela’s crisis and food shortage is the DIRECT result of the socialist policies that created starvation, bread lines, and food shortages in all other socialist countries:
*Inflation of the money supply (pumping fiat money on the economy), price controls, crippling regulations and micromanagement of every aspect of business, nationalization of industries, restrictions on imports and trade, confiscatory taxation, jailing business people who don’t comply, etc, etc.*
Like every other socialist experiment, they used inflation and taxation to fund their programs, and them implemented regulation and price controls to fight the rising prices.
Basic economics kicked in, and massive shortages ensued.
Then the government imposed a biometric system with quotas on what you can buy at the (empty) supermarkets, and then doubled down on regulations, taxes, inflation, and price controls.
Basic economics kicked in again, and massive shortages became even greater.
Massive black markets appeared for every basic product, and the government starter hunting down anyone who tried to sell outside the official markets at the official price.
Basic economics kicked in again, and now everyone is starving.
It’s easy to focus on the dictatorial aspects of the regime (one party system, control of media, no free speech, civil rights violations, government militias, etc), but it was socialism 101 that created the mass starvation, as it has done everywhere else.

Hayek detailed the process in The Road to Serfdom in the 1940s, there is NO EXCUSE to be this ignorant of socialism today:

"Populists and socialists destroy their societies in predictable ways. It's not like one day a populist gets up and says, 'I'm going to ruin this country.' Rather, he starts out wanting to spread the wealth and finds that the easiest way to hand out cash is by simply printing lots of it.

Which creates a new problem: As the currency weakens, prices rise. But the populist finds there's an answer for that too. If bread is getting expensive, he can fix its price, and he gets to vilify the baker as a greedy capitalist.

But then the baker stops producing bread because he can't afford to make it, what with the rising price of flour. And so what does the populist do next? He fixes the prices of flour. When that doesn't work, the politically expedient thing to do will be to take over the bakery and the farms and hand them to the folks in the party's local committees, who prove to be rather less apt at farming and baking..

And if violence does erupt, it can be denounced as the doing of enemies of the state and used as a pretext for renewed crackdowns. ['We're going to tell the imperialism and the international right that the people are present, with their farm instruments in one hand and a gun in the other,' Maduro told a Caracas crowd]. And soon, Mr. Populist finds himself with a good reason to suspend the country's constitution. Thus does a tyrannical attitude toward the shop-owner selling bread lead to a tyranny over a whole nation."
      - Friedrich Hayek

It is not a joke for those of us who live in Venezuela the terrible social, economic, political and health crisis. Millions of Venezuelans have seen our quality of life diminish even when working more. Many people are starving to death. Many young people have been killed, imprisoned and tortured by the regime. I do not forget the massacred in the Junquito and the political prisoners. Thousands of people seek medicines that they can not find or can not afford to save their lives. Thousands of pets that have been abandoned to their fate, because their owners can not feed them or have left the country. Worse yet, they have also abandoned children and old people to their fate who migrate desperate due to an unsustainable situation. Thousands of families have had to separate, shops and businesses have closed, schools and universities are deserted, public and private transport have collapsed due to lack of spare parts and lubricants, hospitals can not care for the sick. Worse yet is the total destruction of values, the growth of crime, and the endless situations that I could keep on listing. I never saw destruction of such magnitude on the part of a government. It is a total lack of respect to take this terrible humanitarian crisis as a joke and here every day people are still dying, Venezuelans eat from the garbage in one of the richest countries in the world. Come live in Venezuela and see if it still seems so funny, I've cried each one of those deaths and it isn't a joke!

I find this segment disturbing and telling that John Oliver (along with 90% of the media) have a Socialist, big govt fetish. Oliver seems to indicate that 'if' 'if' 'if' they 'just did Socialism right' then it would have been so great. I don't think seizing private corporations and companies that don't belong to you 'something that 'could' work if done right'. I think far more people need to come in here and down-vote this trash of a political dumpster fire segment. What Harry potter of the school of propaganda left out is a lot more than you think.
Firstly before hugo Chavez take over Venezuela was run by a psychotic government who let a few Venezuelan people extremely rich and the vast majority of them starving and when the people demonstrated the police open fired and kill many people, eventually that government fled in other countries and hugo Chavez was elected.
What hugo realised is that western countries and companies was looting Venezuela's wealth especially oil . He then took back oil control from the huge petroleum companies making killer profits in the back of Venezuela people.
And for some strange reason Americans declared him their biggest enemy. The western media start there usual lies ,how people where starving leaving the country etc .They even showed demonstrations of opposition demanding American to intervene and remove Chavez from power , there was 30 thousand people in the streets that day ...What cnn ,fox and the rest fail to show is the other demonstrations happening at the same time in favour of hugo Chavez......THEY WHERE 3 MILLION PEOPLE IN THE STREETS THAT DAY.

A few years later there was a an illegal try to take over power from Chavez with parts of the army attacking and installing their own president after some protesters where shot from suppose hugo Chavez police.
Now that Chavez is dead they have their eyes on Venezuela's oil again and started the same propaganda , firstly making their life difficult with sanctions and probably later by force to change this government by force..

As you see Harry potter is part of the propaganda and completely ignored the crimes American inflicted on Venezuela's people.
Please people they are a lot of information that show the truth but they are behind the mainstream media propaganda ,whatever is for Iran,Syria, Palestine ,Venezuela you should study before believing this sick people

Only an idiot thinks Venezuelas problems are caused by socialism, which by the way, every country in the world uses in some form or another. No, its problems are caused by political corruption and poor economic planning (basing your entire economy around export good is very poor planning).
As for socialism never working, when has capitalism ever worked as planned? Income inequality, environmental damage, and political corruption are very high in the Unite States. The average American is less healthy, less safe, and has less of a voice than they did two decades ago. But I'm sure capitalist fanatics will blame that on socialism, even as their champions in congress make endless proclamations that "prosperity for the American people is just around the corner if we only deregulate more." Give me a break. They've been saying that since the eighties and it hasn't been working. If only people knew their history they would know that most of those regulations were made by capitalistic minded individuals with the goal of creating more competition. The deregulation and no-bid contracts that the current establishment are so in love with are in the exact opposite spirit of capitalism.
Economically, there is very little difference between perfect capitalism and socialism. They're both tools for achieving the same goal of maximum human happiness. The ultimate predictor of whether or not it works in reality is not the tools but the user. Corrupt capitalistic and socialistic states both inevitably fail in that regard.
