University Challenge - S51E30 - Reading v Imperial

- We are halfway through the quarter-finals (apparently) and one of these two teams will be the first to qualify for the semi-finals. Who will it be? Reading or Imperial?
Jeremy Paxman asks the questions. Entretenimiento
I'd watch 30 minutes a week of just Zeng answering impossibly obscure geography questions.
_"In what Euro..."_
_Poland!"_
😯
That's where I came from!

@Alan 100 fo real
Singaporean Student Hard Carries His Team On UK TV Quiz Show
I love how the camera zooms on Max Zeng whenever there's a geography related question, then cuts to his teammates looking at him
62nd reply!!
Hehehe 69th REPLY!!!
IMPERIAL ZENG ‼️
68th!
I'm the stepping stone for a golden opportunity for the next person willing to check the replies

i love seeing imperial working together, i came after seeing a clip of zeng and a comment perfectly said it, zeng is amazing at geography and chemistry, sheriff is good at literature and movies, mays is an overall guy, he got answers correct when none of the others knew, and jackson is good at music, i love seeing the little things that show that theres like friendship there, like in 25:03 its nothing much but it made me happy :]
theres them giving educated guesses when they dont know and me not even understanding ehich subject the question is on.
Everyone's talking about Zeng but Sheriff held her own with all the literature questions, well done!
I thought mays was easily the most impressive this episode.
@Emerald Nicki not that hard
@Equality For all he literally edged his team with the David I guess. And both he and Jackson performed better than Sheriff in the final.
Yes 🥰 it wonders watching her buzz so quickly for literature questions and poor Hutchinson a bit late for a sec 🥺
@Emerald Nicki nah … Mays nearly lost the finals for imperial along with Jackson
24:47 It's mesmerizing to see how in sync Zeng and Hutchinson drew the periodic table with their hand movement.
Omg 😱
9:51 Zeng's reaction when someone else buzzed before him on a geography question
NANIIIII?!
@shucklesors lmao wtf do you think you see
@JamesTavRule as a Chinese, i cannot possibly think of a more "white people explain" thing than what this james tav kid just said LMAO
he revealed it was 9 in the morning and he wasn't very awake at the time but that question woke him up and you'll see him buzzing really quickly after that one
gold
Paxman describing how Reading just got "unlucky" is the kindest way he's ever spoken to people on this show 😭
It’a a very British thing
@Cape Imperial (Singapore-Japan) Zeng
They were just unlucky having to face the Imperial Zeng
As a Sinagporean, heard that Zeng's videos went viral, but if you don't just watch the Zeng bits, you will find that the whole team, each member, have their own strengths and putting them together really moved the team forward, not just the effort of a single person. Mays, Sheriff & Jackson are equally as strong as Zeng. They really complement each other to make a very strong team. Everyone has a forte in an area the rest are not familiar in. Zeng stood out alittle more just because there are more historical and geographical questions where his strength lies. A great team. U can see the respect they have for one another. All the best, unless the finals are over.....
@shucklesors yeah he has shown us he's really good but it shouldn't make the other members of his team non-existent and considered leagues below him, they were all great in their own
@shucklesors he made more than an objective point as to why it was the team as a whole that made them stand against other and win, can you also make at least one as to why was zeng the only one that made them win the show? A team is a team, 4 people vs 1 at this high level is objectively two totally separate things.
I'm also Singaporean, and this is a worthless comment. They are not "equally as strong". You can objectively identify, even controlling for subject or any arbitrary "forte" as you'd like to call it, the relative strength of a member in that forte.
Perhaps your point was for readers of your comment to not only focus entirely on Zeng, but it is just plain intellectually lazy to make sweeping comments that are demonstrably false like that.
Yeah mays is brilliant.
Mays is very very good in his own right with a remarkable breadth of knowledge. Zeng is unbeatable on certain subjects. May's strength is that he knows his team, knows what their strengths are and he trusts them. He knows who to go to. A good captain. It was I team of four v one of two. Imperial have more dept. Maybe only Edinburgh can stop them.
I thought mays was the most impressive by far.
@Rocketjack Sheriff has a habit of confirming other people's answers when she is just guessing, attempting to piggyback to get some Kudos, so she does need ignoring much of the time.
@Aris Totle lol bruh in certain topics for example music he discusses it with jackson, he is open for suggestions from max and sheriff too, tf are u saying
@Aris Totle mays knows jackson is the weakest member on the team and gets flustered easily. Max and Sheriff will answer if they know they dont need prompting jus look at how he inmediately turns to them when he knows max/sheriff will know the answer.
I love this team of imperial
They’re obviously all quite young and seem to be good friends too which makes seeing them work together so heartwarming and satisfying when they get it right
The Imperial team seems very balanced and Map Max is just amazing. His ability to visualise locations in maps, periodic tables, timelines is astounding.
@Castelo de Ossos 💯💯
@Castelo de Ossos eidetic memory has been found in some children but not in adults and photographic memory has never been shown to exist, ever
@Castelo de Ossos You are right that they are different as you fairly said but also neither exists scientifically. It’s widely understood within neuroscientific circles that there simply is no proof for such a thing as a photographic memory.
He located one of the elements on the periodic table with his finger (20:41). Obviously got a photographic memory (which is not, btw, the same as an eidetic memory -- for that see, Steve McQueen's card trick in The Cincinatti Kid).
This sort of tells me that having one or two people with highly in-depth knowledge in a few specific fields, like Zeng with geography and chemistry or Sheriff with literature, and a broad knowledge across multiple subjects shared between everyone else is the key to getting points consistently here.
but how do people know or read about all of this ?
That's the strat
They tailor the bonuses to the team I think. The the buzz questions are general.
imagine chatting with these people. they must have known so many "fun facts" and can talk about literally anything
19:48 "I should know this, but I don't" I feel this on a spiritual level, especially when there is a physics test tomorrow
Zeng is flawless in geography, but don't forget about Sheriff who is good at culture, Mays who has general knowledge in many topics and Jackson who knows classical music and astronomy, perfectly balanced team
Sherif smiling is so cute!! I’m so proud of her answers!!
@e889 be careful they'll be comingfor yo ass boi
@e889 What has that to do with the person appreciating her answers?
I don't know if you mistakingly sent that emoji but if you purposely did, then there is something wrong with you
@e889 why you so mad tho
You can see Zeng drawing the periodic table whenever the question refers to elements.
It is normal for Asian to remember periodic table tbh lmao
He's summoning the periodic table from the depths of the chemical dimension.
That’s when you know he’s a true Singaporean who has studied hella hard for O & A Levels Chemistry 👀
on a side note thats very impressive :)
lmaoo
May's is very good captain, I like the way he leads the thinking process of his teammates and showing the direction of where to search in their mind.
Zeng’s geographical knowledge is astounding
He doesn't know much about the geography of cheeses. How do Welsh cheeses drive?
Paxman: "What country..." BZZZZ
Zeng: "Poland"
Paxman: "Correct!"
Timestamp?
@Oliver AB Exactly. everyone knows this.
I'm no Zeng but as soon as partitions were mentioned, I knew it too.
@Oliver AB cheers Ollie
I thought this'd be closer, frankly.
These are both semi-final worthy teams, in my opinion, but wow, Imperial has a very good chance of running away with it. This is a team with a guy so strong on history, geography and historical geography that the mere single instance of him going for the wrong choice on a 50/50 is genuinely surprising, because Zeng has been SO perfect.
If they keep this up, very few teams have any hope.
I just hope Mr. Mays is okay. He seems very nervous.
The gap could actually be smaller, I've noticed that Hutchinson buzzed a few milliseconds later than Imperial several times throughout this round. Just bad luck ig
My guess is due to the lead Reading initially had. All of their earlier matches, they always lead first and then keep up the advantage to a total landslide of difference in points. This time, they didn't have the initial lead but still pushed through above and beyond anyway.
i noticed it too, mays really looked nervous
He also has an image of the periodic table in his mind and looks things up from it with his finger. I truly wonder if he has a photographic memory. He's like having a 60 point head start.
My man Max took it personally when Hutchinson buzzed as quick as he does normally on Madagascar...
Imperial are simply a treat to watch. They all contribute to cover such vast areas of knowledge. As always, Zeng was sensational 👏👏
I knew a lot of these today, but Zeng was so quick that I could hardly think before he'd answer. Well done, Imperial.
@PeachyPie You are also using child's language and punctuation, but OK.
@paperkites hi pls stop acting like a child
@paperkites actual child mentality right here
Love watching Sheriff (though I’m from Singapore and very proud of Zeng - he’s real, not an alien, went to my old school). Sheriff’s smile when she gets something correct (very often) is delightful. Wonderful ethnically diverse Imperial team - and give captain Mays a break, I think he has a lot of respect for his teammates and wasn’t short to or dismissive of any of them! And I watched the whole episode. Happy to have gotten the Greek city before Ounsley did!
@weepin bby LMAOOOO TYPICAL ASIAN MOM
TV makes you proud
@Lyn Kang theyre like “u missed one question about GEOGRAPHY? the subject u claimed to be good at??? out of this house we don’t wanna see your face again”
@Not Armchair Historian Yup totally, like what happened to ALL THOSE you DIDN’T know??
I bet his asian mother and father are just moderately satisfied.
Well done Imperial ! Great team work! Personal thumbs up to Zeng, so proud of you! with love from Singapore
Singapore!! Well done from Singapore!
The Imperial team is a real delight to watch. They have good chemistry and are a cheerful bunch! Zheng quick response and vast knowledge in geography and science is impressive! Getting over 200 points in every matches is unthinkable and the team as a whole is fantastic. 👍
Zeng's reaction when clutchinson beat him to a geography question 9:51 "Ah, finally, a worthy opponent"
Just to echo what everyone else is already saying - Imperial are very well balanced. Reading were more or less a team of 2. Zeng is a wizard. Ones to watch no doubt.
Hutchinson and Ounsley are fantastic but it's a lopsided team. Some great performances from those two but it can only take a team so far
@John Ahearn fantastic quizzers. Imagine Hutchinson will be a great teacher too
Ounsley & Hutchinson were brilliant but gaining a sub at this stage must’ve been tough, no offense to Miss Bishop! I bet O & H will be on Mastermind in the next year or two. At least, I hope so!!!
@翟 But she also had more time than them to acquire knowledge
@翟 agreed. She would make my dream team from the series of the year.
@B MCF great comment! I am not even a football fan, but I remember his seemingly effortless / lazy manner with which he could score goals at ease.
Every time Zeng manages to score, he just shakes his head like "yeah i knew i was right" haha
Ounsley is slaying! She got more starters than a lot of those younger kids! Fantastic flex!
Top team would be Mays, Zeng, Ounsley, and Hutchinson. They could thrash any stuck up Oxbridge team. Paxman would be seething, and reduced to making sneering remarks, as he can't stand it if Oxbridge don't win
Ounsley is good but overall Imperial are a much better team. Reading could win versus Imperial only once in 10 tries, so they need to get very lucky with the Qs.
You were great & I was rooting for your team.
@Martin h 63
I believe she's 60 years old. Really fast brain...but she is a PhD student
I love how everyone in Imperial just compliment each other, I came right after watching a video of Zeng answering obscure geographic questions, and once I saw the whole team patching their way together it was such a harmonies sight! From their captain May the overall guy(plus smlies that lightens the tensed mood), to Jackson's musical knowledge waah I was left amazed such a guy waah! Let's not forget Sheriff's astonishing literature and movies comprehension is top notch, and Zeng, the person who led me to discover such a perfect team, his geographic knowledge always baffles me even though I should get use to it after watching few eps so far.
Anyway, as a viewer I do feel dependent on him too with each geographic question 😂. OFC, not only him but the others too.
ahhhhh! I love how they depend on each other !! there need to be a video of it!!!
I also like how they smile and laugh as they make a few mistakes but comeback with a full on headgear of serious facile expression for the next question 😂.
Imperial YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Imperials entire team can contribute I think that’s the difference
There are at least half a dozen moments you see Hutchinson hit the button and grimace when he sees Imperial beat him to the buzzer by fractions of a second.
If anyone is wondering, 95 stands for XCV, X=10, C=100, V=5. If a lower number comes before a higher one, you substract it instead. So -10+100+5=95.
its kinda mesmerizing to see how all of them carry themselves. they’re treating such an unusual level of intelligence like its a normal conversation.
Impressive comeback for Imperial. Their individual unique strength is strong but Mays is a good captain with broad knowledge.
Behold the Finals Match up...
It will be a thrill to watch Ounsley Hutchinson take on Zeng and Co.
Reading will get thrashed unless they are extremely fortunate with the Qs as they are only a 2 person team at best. Imperial for the win!
Imagine hearing "Hi my name is Mike Zeng, I'm from Singapore and I study Biochemistry" from an alleyway in the middle of the night
Excellent (and entertaining, as Paxman said) performance from Imperial! Seriously impressive all around. Jackson seemed to come alive too… Imperial vs Edinburgh is almost inevitable now.
It's Imperial vs Reading now. Reading has a strong duo and they analyse every question carefully. It would be good to see a rematch
Emmanuel Cambridge should go against with Imperial next
Ya, just hope they don't end up meeting in the semi finals
I like how I’m drawn into this without understanding most of the questions. Haha!
Imperial had a slow start, but they managed to pick themselves up and pull together. Hats off to them. 👍
Both captains are amazing. And for imperial, average age is 22, how can you guys know so much at such young age! 🤯
@Michael Pangau reading or Reading 🤔
reading
How’s no one talking about how Mays knows every single topic. He’s more impressive than zeng to me. He literally leads them in answering most of the questions. So smart
@Redefined Living i agree with you. Being well rounded is harder and more useful than only being good at one thing.
@hello man Generalists almost always have that one thing they specialized in. It might not be as deep as the actual specialists but isn't he a PHD in physics?
@Redefined Living Not even remotely true. One life goal is to become a master of something.
Jack of all trades master of none? Apparently, a lot of people prefers specialist better.
Not really. It's easier to specialize thAn to be well rounded
Imperial reminds me of a South African horse that used to dominate the Gr 1 races, appropriately called Do It Again. Just when you think they can't possibly sustain this level of competition, they don't just do it again but they actually raise the level. I will honestly be devastated if they lose this competition. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching them.
Zeng is an extraordinary player!
Amazing performance by Zeng……knowledge and buzzer skills on point! I think even Pax is amazed……there’s a subtle awe that he looks at Zeng with👍🏾
All of them are undoubtedly smart but Imperial is the most balanced team
Must have been a lot of pressure on Mays being the leader. Everyone did well!
Brings back memories of school debates. Inspires me to read up more on specific toics and be a real geek.
Seriously one of the best shows to watch here in ESclips. ❤️❤️❤️
Imperial is amazing, great teamwork. Salute to Zeng!
Mays is a good leader for expounding member’s ideas, Zeng is the MVP, Sheriff and Jackson are great team players making Imperial a formidably great team.
theyre very well rounded. math is usually a weakness but thats the only one ive noticed
Coming here to witness Zheng’s greatness, but overall the entire team is very strong!
That's what it takes - incredible individual knowledge, great teamwork, backing each other and fast on the buzzer. Imperial can go all the way.
Can't wait for the next Imperial episode! Anticipating Zeng and Sheriff to brainstorm; esp Zeng. Wana see Mr human-GPS lead a brainstorm of cities associated with the globe! (Some say, universe 😂)
Honestly, i haven't understood the question yet and they got the answer already 😂
You're not alone 🤣
Same friend, same
.
8:36 my reaction to Zeng's knowledge.
Zeng is the definition of an answer sheet
These are next level nerds... and its a pleasure to see them wreck each other by answering astounding obscure facts.
In all seriousness, I come here to see the look on their faces when Jeremy Paxman gives them the correct answer for these borderline unanswerable questions and it's always "darn it, of course the answer was the mortuary mask of 'Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal'! How could I have missed that obvious question?"
Also, I'm really looking forward to the finals where Max Zeng will walk us through the least populated cities of Imperial Prussia in the 18th century and their modern names (if any).
I think it’s team work. Each member has their strong point! Well done!
What a nice comeback from 30-85 to 225-120. Insane!
I adore Sheriff. She's just super adorable.
I just love the attitude when everyone just look at Zeng everytime Paxman gives questions about India 😂
Anyway, a great play from Imperial! Congratulations 🎉
Excellent teams, both of them. Congratulations to Imperial, Mays could be less short with Zeng though. :/
I put a long distance journey into my Sat Nav today. It said "Nominate Zeng."
Brilliant!
Best comment!
@Joseph Karl 😊
Every time I'm not sure of anything, that's going to be my answer now 😅 I can't go wrong.
Wow! My money's on Imperial for the title! Zeng is their secret weapon, but the other three are no sluggards.
secret weapon in plain sight
Either them or Edinburgh
Two great teams but Imperial are simply fantastic and such a broad range of knowledge. I can’t wait for Edinburgh v Imperial now, that has to be the final
No it's gonna be a rematch of these 2 teams
Mays’ “Ooh” when Paxman says “apples in fine art” 😂
Imperial have been my favourite team to watch this year by far, good spirits, great knowledge. Excellent all round team!
Zeng's photographic memory tho. He was literally drawing the P-block on thin air lol 24:44
So did Hutchinson
Max Zeng's performance is not going to be lost on job interviewers.
@John Wig well, you aren't so sure that he would answer "quick and fast" to your questions, for example, you are holding up a business about the environment, he might not know much about it, why? because it isn't in his strand. and the only reason you found him versatile/quick-thinking was that the questions were related to his education. no hate to max just wanted to point it out.
This guy is gonna be the one doing the interview.
@Jean-Pierre Magpily Missing the point. What Max did isnt merely an indication of his geography knowledge, but his versatility, commitment and quick thinking in an area he aint supposed to be good at. He's a chem student, not geog.
If you've hired people into white collar jobs before, you'll sense that Zeng has a first class, a quick mind, very bright and a great attitude - is not all about his geography knowledge and you know he's actually a biochemist right? 😉
Things that I can Google dun consider as skills
Hats off to the imperial team! So proud of everyone
I'm only here to see Zeng hit the buzzer before the question finishes.
The cool thing about Imperial is that they all were able to contribute, unlike many other teams...
Thanks Dave! What a great match with wonderful teams! Imperial had a hesitant start but once they gained momentum, it was an impressive steamroller. I really enjoy Hutchinson and Ounsley however.
Imperial's match videos got lots of views so far. I really love this show I've been binge watching for a week now! 💙
"Italy!" I'm like "whaaaaat?!! How is that It-" "Italy is correct!". This show never ceases to teach me things!
Lol that was the only one I knew ahahahahahahahah but I am italian so…
England adopted the Genoa flag. Many English football fans learned it when England lost the Euro Cup.
That was easy. Everyone knew it.
@Charsiupao That makse sense tbf
@Willem van Oranje / Guillaume d'Orange In hindsight, I recall Venice having that symbol in Medieval Total War games, true. Seeing that red cross on the top right made me think England initially, though.
I just love the fact that Ounsley said "gross" with straight face got their marks in the opening.
what a comeback for Imperial
Geez, Zeng is like Google search with a quantum processor 😳
damn what a comeback by Imperial, I was worried at the start there where Reading was leading
Aside from geography, Zeng not only memorized the periodic table but also each element’s position and atomic number.
Came here to watch Sherrif because she seemed cool, was pleasantly surprised to see how their team functions. They are all OP
Once Imperial got going, they did well. Thanks Dave.
Both teams killing it! Perhaps a grand final preview.
I love how i'm just hearing every question and not even having remotely any idea what the awnser could be but still enjoying myself watching them awnser it.
I wondered when they were going to flip the switch on Zeng. He's so strong.
Imperial showed much better teamwork and all players pulled their weight. What a strong team.
Reading came out swinging, but then Imperial got one right and didn't stop getting them all right. I'm thrilled my two favorite teams are in the final.
Zeng strikes again, big player much respect
Impressive win by Imperial. It's shaping up for some entertaining finals. (thanks very much for the uploads, Dave)
What an awesome team !
What a match! Both teams a pleasure to watch in my view like-truly, however Imperial gave a performance worth remembering!
Imperial grabbed the starters by the throat as the contest went on, complemented with their broad array of knowledge, especially in geography. Thanks to them, the thumbnail jinx has been broken (for now).
At the last 2 minutes with a close score of both team
Imperial: Listening very carefully to the question
While me: Looking to the table of Imperial if they will buzz for the question
That was a close fight. And I'm happy that Imperial made it! Congrats! Also I feel you captain Mays, I was nervous also at the last part. Lol.
Well done Imperial...you folks are amazing to watch! Nothing can touch you except Lux & Palmolive! Good luck in the semis!
Why did Reading send a team of only two? They are going to struggle against a well balanced team.
@John G He's clearly there for the Science questions since it's the team's obvious weak point. Can't remember Reading getting any science bonuses this game and he's too slow to beat Imperial to the buzzers, so he didn't add much at all.
@Grim Skopic wasn't much help back then either. Even before this round, it was 70% Hutchinson 30% Ounsley
@Grim Unfortunately Jesudoss just isn't a good fit for this game. I don't remember him ever getting a starter question correct or been helpful in the team questions. I'm guessing He is not really a quizzer or a long time fan of the show because his knowledge pool doesn't match the show.
Well, one was a backup/alternate player. Apart from not being a 1st choice, she didn't have any experience at the game.
Well done Imperial. Great teamwork.
I love how they're dressed in different colors which matches their personalities
Hahaha youre right
