- Let's hope this one is not age restricted!
In this match, Newnham Cambridge take on Cardiff for a place in the quarter final.
Jeremy Paxman asks the questions. Entretenimiento
Hey everyone, Balkwill-Western here.
I suppose I'll start by thanking everyone who made this possible. To Paxo and the University Challenge staff, to Cardiff Uni and all the friends we made along the way. Congrats to Newnham (and you guys better win this thing now) and a big shoutout to the rest of the Cardiff team. It's been great fun quizzing with you all and as we go our separate ways I wish you all the best in the future.
Naturally I'm disappointed that we had to exit the competition, but I don't think I could've asked for a better way for it to happen. You win some and you lose some, and the questions just didn't favour us this time around. That's not to detract from Newnham of course; if any of you are reading this then allow me to complement you on your breadth of knowledge and especially your buzzer skills. You blew us out of the water in that regard.
Jolly good show everyone.
And pool's closed.
That's so generous and courteous - lovely!
You did great! Also ``And pool's closed`` - legend
That surname tho...
I was rooting for you Cardiff. You were great
Excellent afro, my sides
A truly excellent match. I would have been happy to see either team advance but Newham's genuine enjoyment of the competition and the rarity of an all female team making a deep run makes them my personal favorite to win the season.
@wideeyedraven15 Did you watch the first round match where Chen accidentally leaned on the buzzer, interrupting Paxman? "Oops sorry, didn't mean to buzz"... Arguably cost her team the game!
@covkid52 really? She did pretty well in the other matches and far better than your efforts in any such regard and before you say a thing in retort, I’m a former champ of such a thing and I can tell you it’s not easy and this is a team competition. Shut it.
100 this
@Andrew Delaney You're obviously being sarcastic, as it seems that Chen gave the wrong answer most of the time!
@Andrew Delaney 🤣
Newnham are such fun - surely the first team to visibly enjoy themselves and have a good laugh while clocking up the points.
@Alani Chen is the only one taking it seriously.
@Alani slightly disrespectful + not how it works. you can only swap out a teammate for your substitute once in a series and usually it never happens unless the person is unable to compete.
They should replace Chen. She is either not contributing, or misleading them with incorrect answers.
As I've said before, it's the best team chemistry I've seen on UC. It's a joy to watch.
the corpus team from 2020 seemed fantastic friends as well!
I think that may have been most thrilling finale to a UC match I can remember. This wasn't just a nail biter for me, I would have bitten into a tree had there been one next to me. Absolutely elated that Newnham went through! They have nerves of steel. What a tremendous team! And what an incredible effort from Cardiff, too.
@Kay Waters Discussing the result is what the comment section is for. You even had to get to the third sentence!
@Kay Waters Kay, the comments are hidden from view when this page appears. You need to scroll to see them. ESclips has been designed that way. People do not automatically see any posts when they call up a video. Moreover, everybody usually knows not to read the comments first on boards like this one. Last but not least, what makes you think that I am responsible for the screen design? It's not my fault that my post appears at the top. However, one post has to, and depending on your settings, the one with the most likes usually does! Why are we having this discussion?
@slightlygrouchy I wish I could post a screen shot here. You would know, then, that your comment about who had won was visible before anyone could see the contest.
@slightlygrouchy the post was there for all to see
@Kay Waters As always, watch first, then read the comments and post.
Newnham still needs to improve in the bonus round but it's great to see an all women team in the quarterfinals.
@Andrew Delaney LOL
@Andrew Delaney I was happy for them because all-women teams are a rarity let alone having one make it to the quarters so I don't know how that triggered you for some reason. lol
@Andrew Delaney you feeling a bit small Andrew?
I've been looking at the bonus question stats for all teams: they are all low this year.
Never seen a team so good as Newnham at communication, discussing and confirming, between all four members - pretty much all the time on the conferring parts; a shining example of full focus. Really, really good.
Oh, and thanks Dave.
Ellis is great. What a player.
Good game.
Ellis is totally rocking this.
Loving how Newnham keep winning and keep appearing more and more surprised each time.
As always, thanks Dave.
Can someone find out where I can buy Ellis's shirt?
Also good show!
I said to my girlfriend before it started that this was going to be a very close game. Two great teams, and both very likeable . Shame one of them had to go out. This was one of the greatest ever matches. Congrats to Newnham, and bad luck to Cardiff.
Great match! Two lovely teams. A shame one of them has to go home. Thank you so much, dear Dave!
Freeman's timid reaction whenever she answers correctly is so cute
What a ripper of a game! IMO it's always nice to see genuine emotion when the time comes, and after seeing Ellis answer that tiebreaker all I wanted to do is give her a hug 😄 Well done Newnham! 👏
This is the second time Ellis was legendary. If you're reading congrats on having an amazing brain!
LOVED THIS ONE, SO CLOSE. I'm a diehard Newnham fan, rooting for them till the end!
I'm with you there! Go Newnham, go!
Brilliant stuff. Thrilled we get at least 2 more matches of Newnham, what a fun group. Ellis was so clutch in those last 5 minutes or so. And as a team, they seem to be improving with each match.
I noticed that as well. This is a team that really is still developing, which is another reason they are such a joy to watch.
What a match. That was absolutely fantastic stuff by both teams.
What a match. Ellis has such a fast mind!
I so loved the way the all-women team supported each other verbally. A great match!
Aloha from Hawai'i!
Love how Freeman was barely whispering the correct answers to an impressive number of starter questions.
Wow, by far the best match of the season. Awesome to watch both teams and the questions were quite interesting too.
Terrific game! Two delightful teams.
I love Mondays! Thank you Dave! What an entertaining and fun match! Two delightful teams with my favorites as the winners! Looking forward to seeing them again.
“two delightful teams” Yes, they were both very engaging. I think Zoë Revell wins the prize for the season’s most pleasant pass 17:19.
Nail biting finish. Great match.
Thanks Dave, from Denton Texas.
Most of the bonus questions were harder than the starters. An absolutely brilliant performance by both teams, and it came down to the wire.
Watching Newnham just makes me feel good! Thanks, Dave.
2 amazing and lovely teams ! The match was very enjoyable. I am a bit sad that we won’t be able to see Cardiff again but congrats to Newham 👏
Two of the most delightful and funnest teams ever. Pity one of them had to lose.
This Ellis person is pretty smart icl
@Some Guy Haha, I'm a junior. My dad went by Ellis, so I chose to go by my middle name, Chris. Elsewise I'd have been Ellis jr.
What is about people with the name Ellis? J/k, as Ellis happens to be my first name.
Ha, any relation? Ellis absolutely smashed it.
That was brilliant. I was on the edge of me seat the whole time. Thank you for bringing it to us. Cheers
Thanks, Dave! Am currently in Kenya so it was great to still be able to see UC!
A great game. Either team would have been worthy winners. Rather a shame one had to be eliminated as I think Cardiff is a better team than some who have gone (or are about to go) through.
Gotta love Carrie being mistaken for Son of Rambow.
@LindaKalin Both teams gave it a go, the second guess being Son of Rambow.
The incorrect answer given was 3 Women. An easy enough mistake as Sissy Spacek played Pinky Rose in that film.
Excellent match..two great teams and the added excitement of a rare final standoff....well done all!
Literally the only thing I look forward to on Mondays. I kept thinking these were evenly matched teams. And boy was I thrilled with the result
Had to laugh at Paxman's question just after 20:09. Great match!
I noticed that too.
Sometimes one team just gets that extra bit of luck they need. Ellis guessing 18th not 19th century created the tie she went on to win for her team.
Likewise when one from each side buzzed for Scott Joplin, Newnham got 10+ the full 15 whereas had the others got even just the starter the final score would have been Newnham 115 Cardiff 150 so totally different.
And a netball tie-breaker with a team of 4 ladies didn't hurt (although I noticed Cardiff's captain Zoe Revell buzzed a fraction of a second later as well).

I don\t know if this is of any interest to you or anyone else...but this is a short list of the top individual scorers to date. The cut off for me was 40 points, so I did not include those with less.

@Herr Schmidt Noticed that too. Ellis's 6/7 carried them across the finish line: lots of buzzing AND still a very good success rate.
Interesting - a lower success rate for the winner.
@はるにゃん 猪狩ファミリー An amazing match indeed.
The tie breaker to decide the winner? Pressure on! Thanks again Dave, got up early in the hope, and you came through 👍
MATCH COMMENTARY BELOW
Thanks again, Dave! Today I'm continuing my French-themed Meal of the Match with Steak au Poivre! I searched through several recipes to find one I liked, that had both cognac and red wine. I guess I should warn everyone first: if you're thinking of making this, have a fire extinguisher handy. Because the recipe calls for igniting about a third of a cup of cognac in a pan. Better safe than sorry. I served this with green beans almondine and risotto. Dessert was chocolate mousse, and all of it enjoyed with a merlot! Fantastique!
About the match itself...WHAT AN EXCITING GAME! I can honestly say I was overjoyed at the result, yet at the same time sad to see the other side go. I feel that these two teams could have met in the finals. As always, my best to all the members of both teams. And I wish each team member the best of success in their future endeavors! See you all next week!
Two excellent teams! Newnham look like they're having a blast. I hope they go far!
What a great game! Though such a pity that the two teams should already meet this early, would have loved to see them both go further.
It wasn't the greatest game for me personally, though. However, for once my debilitating disability and illness helped me, since I am on total parenteral nutrition, so that was one of only a handful questions, I surely knew the answer to.
What an excellent game. Far more suspenseful and exciting than the two previous.
That was one heck of a game! Thanks Dave for the upload.
That was very impressive and BRILLIANT from both teams. Thank you
What an incredible match-up! Loved that tonight. Two really likable teams. Pretty pleased with my own score tonight too, unusual at this stage of the tournament!
Am I mistaken, or is this the second tie we've had this series?! Went all those years without seeing one. Thanks as always, Dave! Mondays never been so enjoyable
Newnham could have sealed it, but how could she not know "value added" (value area lol), which was an own-goal gifted answer to the other team. That led to about a 40 point swing.
@Gavin Roberts Yeah that was tough luck, but Newnham have made up for it since!
@Chris Hobbs Thanks, Chris. Yes, that's right (episode 8). In their first round match against Courtauld, Newnham accidentally buzzed on the last question and didn't know the answer, thus losing 5 points. Had they got the starter correct, it would've resulted in ten points and a tie-break at the gong! (episode 13).
@Gavin Roberts No that was University of Sheffield that lost on the previous tie breaker.
I believe you are correct, second tie breaker in a season. Has to be a new record!
What a great match. Thanks very much for putting it up!
Paxo was really struggling with his diagnosis last season, this season he's been flawless!
Don't think he was struggling with his diagnosis at all. Made it publicly very clear that he's got Parkinson's. No doubts about the diagnosis. But compared with earlier pre-Parkinson's episodes, clear he's no longer able to smile, etc., which is why the ungenerous think he's a grim bastard.
Brilliant game all the way, I'm glad to see Newnham squeeze through, well done Ellis on that decider question, mega fast.
I love the match, it was so so exciting, i had a pause because i got too excited towards the end 😂
bloody close. Shame to see Cardiff out but newnham are so sharp.
That 18th Century call on the Russian history bonus round from Ellis was the definition of quizzing hutzpah
I LOVE Newnham, especially the wonderful Bowen. Brilliant, modest and so lovely!
Excellent match. Thanks, Dave
Great game! I was cheering for everyone
Wow! That was a contest. Feel so sorry for Cardiff.
Newnham are definitely my favourite team❤❤❤❤
I can’t decide whether I like the Newnham or Jesus team more 😢 Hope they only meet each other in the grand finale.
Bowen was brilliant.
Excellent contest. Well done you all
Great stuff! Cheers Dave!
Watched it live. What a nail biter, enjoy guys!
Great match!
Newham are my favourite team.
The Cambridge team are so adorable!
Starts at 2:29
Great match. Thanks Dave.
Well done, Ellis 👏👏✊✊🔥🔥
Cracking edge-of-the-seat game.
Great contest, close as it gets (cheers for the upload)
Hotdamn what a sudden death ending! Remarkable.
Love these girls. Truly charming people!
That was spectacular!
Good game:)) btw Ellis is excellent
love them so much, thankyou.
I am such a Newnham fangirl.
Best ending EVER
I’m glad the last starter question before the gong was dedicated to the late Dilip Kumar, the Tragedy King of Bollywood.
this is my favorite ! episode soy fan de esa calvita desde el primer episodio que aparecio
Great match!!
Hurrah Newnham are through Thanks Dave Genevieve Antwerp
Thanks Dave 👍🏻
That doesn't happen at the end very often. 😅
excellent game!
Thanks Dave!
Much obliged to you, sir.
@davegarda7692 as always, thanks for your dedicated efforts. Just wondering how you go about the closed captions. Automatically generate them and leave it or you go in and edit/correct them? Watching the episode on mute with subtitles at 4:24 it showed par and pax and got me thoroughly confused. 🤭
@Tee Kay accurate to the point of faithfully transcribing what Paxo says, but that's just the way some English speakers end with the r sound for words that end with 'a'.
If I recall correctly, he downloads the closed captions straight from BBC’s site.
The closed captions are accurate, even during that part.
Tragedy King Dilip Kumar the Last question's answer, Bollywood Marlon Brando. Exciting match. Dave is the best.
I had to look up the answer, but I would have loved to hear the question in its entirety as well!
Good one.
Cardiff were a bit unlucky with some tough bonuses
Great game.
the son of rambow fluff for a still from carrie was so funny
@Susan Harris it’s called Son of Rambow. it’s a movie about two kids who idolise Rambo and decide to make their own version of First Blood. So…
You are the second person that keeps saying the son of rambow, when it's Son of Rambo.
Good game!
Great competition.
Is it not true that if you enjoy the thing you are doing, you will have more success?
It's quite annoying that the last of most of the three bonus questions is by far the easiest. Why do they arrange it like this?
The 21st century guide to the mannerisms of modesty in dem youth.
When Paxman says "with an average age of" does he mean of the team or the university?
@Michael Haboubi
One university cannot have an average age.
@Gerrard the OP meant the average age of students in the university or the average age of the team, not the average age of the rocks and stones that built the university ;-)
The university would be about 600 years old!
Of the team
Freeman = WOW
She was a total monster on literature and film! Such a joy to watch. Absolutely brilliant! Gutted to see her depart from the competition this early. Her team would have made the semis easily.
The three ladies have carried Chen every episode. If they had a proper fourth, they would be steamrolling opponents
Would like to also reiterate this. I watched an episode with my Jordanian partner and there were like maybe one or two questions about the Middle East. You really notice how uk/Eurocentric the questions are - and granted it is a uk show, but still…
We are seeing a trend of non-Euro students being very quiet. I think it demonstrates UC’s heavy focus on western canon. Even Imperial Zeng from last year wasn’t much chop on the poetry of the Restoration or on 19th century German philosophers.
rip bae 😭💔 scored 11
Newnham are like a cool girl band.
Ellis is phenomenal but they performed poorly in the bonus questions. They're just not great enough to get much further I guess, but we shall see. Loved the match nonetheless!
no questions asked on physics, chemistry, geography at all !!!!!!!!
