The pace. The graphics. The instructor. The voice. Confident. Calm. Clear. These are but some of the words that come to mind. My wife being a new sailor of one year really enjoys listening to Marco. She explained she had less anxiety than when she was learning or when she reviewed. This channel is saved on three devices. Absolute brilliance!.

This video series is so good that I keep coming back again after watching and absorbing for a few weeks. I'm on my fourth cycle now, and each time I find new nuggets. There is so much knowledge packed into the videos and the 10 minute or so duration is just right for learning. Kudos. I'm ready for the checklists and cheatsheets mentioned in this video, but I couldn't find them on your website. Could you post a link?
I wish I was closer so that I could sign up for in person instruction. I bet I'd learn a lot more from you in person, and it would be great to learn it all on my own boat.

Just came back from my first weekend under sails and it was AMAZING!!! A beginning of new adventure.
Thank you Marco for great videos, after watching a few of them beforehand I was more confident about what is going on around the yacht and it made understanding the commands from instructor so much easier. Keep it going :)

Wow, this video is super helpful! How does it not have millions of views? I have started studying the sailing theory in my native language, but I don't even live or plan on sailing in my country, so knowing the English terminology is a must and that's how I came across this gem. Hoping to utilize the knowledge from this channel on my upcoming vacation which will include a sailing trip!

Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging comment. The concept for my channel was to be line bc a sailing magazine exploring various topics. Ep1 was an intro to the channel and concept.
Ep 2 was on serving an inflatable PFD and Ep 3 was on Collision Regulations.. Being a sailing instructor many of the videos are instructional

Just what I needed. I've sailed and owned sailboats for 50 years, on & off, but just bought my first "big" boat last year, an old Islander 30, which was built just after I first started sailing (1972). After all these years, I figured that it was time I learned the terminology for parts of the sailboat, etc, or at least get it more clear in my mind what I thought I knew. There's more to know about on the bigger boats. What you shared here was very helpful. I very much appreciate the effort you put into making this video. I learned more in such a short time than any other videos or classes. I'll be coming back again!

Love the video. It is VERY helpful. Just one question, is the windward / leeward graphic correct? It seems to me both boats are sailing windward.

    • Carpe Diem Sailing
Carpe Diem Sailing  Hace 3 meses +1

Thank you Still Passion! The graphic has nothing to do with sailing simply which boat is physically further upwind in relation to the other. Hope this helps.

I helped sail a boat from Hawaii to Fiji once when I was younger. The cap'n promised to teach me to sail. Instead, he screamed at me the whole month. Yelling, cussing. I was so scared and abused I learned little. He got drunk in Western Samoa and cut his hand on the anchor. We kept going. He got gangrene and couldn't captain. I took over, knowing little, although I had learned to navigate. I got us into Suva. The cap'n took over right as we got into Suva, delirious, and put us on a reef there. He was nuts. So mean. Anyway, I plan on buying a boat, God willing, and learning to sail again. I would give anything for a teacher like you, calm, natural, slow, decent. thanks

    • barb transformed
      barb transformed Hace 11 meses

@Carpe Diem Sailing Our captain was mean but hilarious in a way. We'd be up steering and he'd be down below cussing at something. But we caught him with a stash of yummy food he'd try to eat hidden from us. He didn't teach us how to be safe. He kept telling me I was a woman so he wasn't about to teach me how to sail since women were only good for sex and cooking. He kept telling me that repeatedly for weeks, this after I steered the boat manually for 8 hours a day. He relieved me and was always late. One day I had had enough of the verbal abuse. I told him that if he wouldn't teach me things because i was a woman, forget it. I'm on strike. I went below and slept. I told him no longer would I steer and I'd get off in W. Samoa. So then a couple hours later the boat was rocking terribly. I thought what are those two guys doing up there? I went up and a terrible squall had hit. The guys were battling it and the capn said we might die. They couldn't get the sail down. I said why didn't you come get me earlier? He said, well you are on strike. I said, well not in these conditions! It was a crazy trip. I love it so much but the capn made it hard. thanks

Wow! What an experience! That must have been traumatic. Thank you for the kind comment. I'm surprised that experience didn't turn you off sailing forever. Good for you for giving it another go. Times have changed but there are still many of those types of people out there. Whenever people on these pages ask about how to learn to sail, numerous comments usually pop up recommending people to join a race crew to learn to sail. Worst advice ever! You might learn a few things, pick up a lot of bad habits and most likely get yelled at. Best way to learn is to find a good reputable school with good instructors, there are many of them out there. My learn to sail playlist will go a long way to help you prepare and review the theory, but ultimately you need to put the knowledge to work on the water. Good luck with it and don't be discouraged. You have proven that you have what it takes, so keep going and let me know if I can help in any way.

      Thank you sir !
I have more questions relating to ships =
      1) What is a bunk i.e., upper bunk and lower bunk ?
      2) What's the meaning of this sentence =
"To protect the ship from rough weather, the captain decided to slow the boat down. To do so, they dropped the storm jib and lashed heavy mooring rope in a loop across the stern."
      3) What's the meaning of =
"But still there was a tremendous leak somewhere below the waterline. I found that nearly all the boat's main rib frames were smashed down to the keel."
      4) Meaning of =
"To protect the weakened starboard side, I decided to heave-to-with the undamaged port hull facing the oncoming waves using an improvised sea anchor of heavy nylon rope and two 22 litre plastic
      barrels of paraffin."
😅 Sorry for disturbing you .

    • Carpe Diem Sailing
Carpe Diem Sailing  Hace un año

No problem. The cabin is everything down below, the living quarters. The deck is the top of the boat that you walk around on. The front is called the foredeck and around the mast is the mid ships deck. The cockpit is the area where the helm is and where the boat is worked from. Traditionally the cockpit is the open area at the back of the boat but there are also centre cockpit boats. Hope this clears it up for you

Thanks for the comment Drew. In that animation I’m merely stating that the boat on the left is further upwind than the one in the right. Therefore the boat on the left is to windward of the boat on the right.
