Wow, this episode was a good one for me. I don't think I have ever answered so many questions correctly.
Yes imagine venezuela making the dollar legal tender
Much appreciated 🙏 Hope you are well.
Abramovich is so handsome :o
The winners were not on show tonight. Surely?
Is it me, or are the question setters manipulating the question order so as to prefer team A for the first half, then team B for the second. These comebacks from well down seem to happen more than one might expect ?
I can't read a note of music, but I did guess Peter.
Hard questions in this quarter final! Only knew the answer to four of them. Thanks Dave for the upload!
Absolutely ridiculous comeback by Royal Holloway
i'm sure someone has already asked this [got the proper answer too] - but is Radcliffe some relation to Daniel Radcliffe? There's a strange similarity, yeah?
and I got the El Salvador one ,but then I'm old and watch the news
the only one I got ,got first was Hampshire but then it was the only question I understood
Both teams took far too long over questions they couldn't answer. Very annoying.
Not the exciting game l was expecting from these two strong teams, with many starters and bonuses missed.Things definitely perked up towards the end. Congrats to RH . Thanks to Dave for our much anticipated weekly entertainment!
A series of the hardest questions so far.
The alternate timeline where Venezuela adopted the US dollar and then the bitcoin as its currency is WILD.
And is approximately the size of Wales (or indeed Wales is the size of Venezuela)
for the love of god can you please hurry them on much quicker than that, Paxman? This was excruciating to watch with the ridiculously long deliberations, which the low scores also reflect. Also I dont understand the logic of it from a tactical perspective for the teams... like, you are trailing in points, why in the name of everything holy would you spend an eternity discussing an answer that neither of you know for five measly points that you're not going to get anyway? Just fucking pass and move on and bag more starters
@GroovingPict Parkinson's *does* affect how much time a person takes to do and react to things - that is, they take more time. And without meaning to be disrespectful, there's not a great deal they can do about that. Michael J Fox was able to keep his acting career going for a very long time after *his* diagnosis, but he would have had to take that bit more time preparing for each of his roles (and everyone else involved would have had to work around that). Paxman's Parkinson's *has* affected the way he hosts this show - watch a few episodes from before he was diagnosed and you'll see what I mean. And he *is* leaving at the end of this series - only eight more episodes with him as host after this one, in fact. Also he *has* been hosting this show for *29* years, which no-one can deny is a splendid run. Bamber Gascoigne, God rest him, only did it for 25 years (and there are still some folks out there who understandably prefer him to Paxman). So with all that in mind, I'm sorry to say but "For the love of God can you please hurry them on much quicker than that, Paxman?" is a little too harsh a comment. Not many people are looking forward to when Amol Rajan takes over - it may well be that *his* hosting will attract even harsher comments, *and* these comments may be more justified. Obviously, we won't know for sure until we actually see him in action.
@Des Elmes does Parkinson's affect a person's sense of time? Because otherwise there was no point in bringing it up
You know, don't you, that (1) Paxman has Parkinson's, which explains why even he has slowed up and is that bit softer towards the students than he was before, and (2) he's leaving the show at the end of this series? And you still remember the game between Emmanuel and King's last series, don't you? Now *that* was something of a tooth-pulling exercise - especially the almost endless picture round on national flags. ;)
Scully lost so many points

Durham's clock management strategy didn't work. They would take a lot of time in the early game to accumulate points to leave no room for the opposing team to come back. This time, it didn't work since they only got around 100 points and a 30 points lead after the second picture round, giving Royal Holloway room to recover.
@RUBBER BULLET If they were faster in the bonuses in the early game where they had control of the buzzer and the momentum, they could have accumulated more points and given themselves more of a lead. Sometimes it's not just about knowing or not knowing the questions, psychological state plays a key role.
So they couldn't challenge towards the end because they were all challenged out? Or is it clock management that they didn't know the later questions? What are you wittering about?
This has to be the most surprising match this series. Not surprised that Royal Holloway performed so well but Durham messing up especially their strongest player was unexpected. Also Royal Holloway's Captain was amazing and outperformed Brown(one of my favourite player this season). Anyways, I still feel Durham will make it to the semis with UCL and Bristol.
@Sharanya Ray I think this year, there is no really dominant team and each match can throw up a surprise. I thought Durham was almost invincible and Cardiff would make it to the semis. If Newnham can find their stride, they will definitely win their next game. They are just loose enough.
@slightlygrouchy yeah in the last few matches the losing team who are actually quite strong are having too many early buzzers wrong. The thing is while Newnham is a well rounded team and Royal Holloway is mostly 2 membered let's not forget last year when Reading almost won the final while Edinburgh a very good team couldn't reach the finals. Royal Holloway goves me Reading vibes with a young male captain and an experienced lady to his side only difference is the other 2 of Royal Holloway aren't useless like Reading's.
@Sharanya Ray I think they are definitely a better team than Royal Holloway and Southampton, and on par with Bristol and UCL. They need to get into a rhythm, though. And the last time, they just didn't manage to!
@slightlygrouchy before the quarters, I had thought UCL, Durham, Bristol and either Royal Holloway or Newnham would be in semis with Southampton as a replacement. Royal Holloway is already in semis and the rest 3 are really strong competitors. Newnham lost to Bristol and while I really love their team dynamics and sad to not see them, I just think the other have a better chance.
You forgot Newnham! It's very important not to forget Newnham! Please don't forget about Newnham in the future! They are my favourite team of all time. I am just telling you that because you probably didn't know it!
Would love a Royal Holloway v UCL final. The two oldest teams showing the young pups how it works.
The penalties really cost Durham the game tonight.
I so wanted Margaux's Christian name to be Margot.
What an absolutely incredible comeback! Especially against Durham, quite possibly the strongest team in this year's competition. Didn't see it coming and am still shell shocked. PS Thanks a bunch, Dave! PPS The music question was absolutely brilliant!
If the other team has botched the starter, you have no reason at all to not buzz in until the end of the question! Especially when it's the first half of the game! So frustrating!
Wow, I thought Royal Holloway was done for. Phew! Pretty difficult questions, I thought. But was surprised they didn't get vocal cords.
Brown is a powerhouse.
Thanks Dave, from Argentina
Brown was a little slow to start today, but came to her own later. Definitely a brain freeze on the leucocyte question. But what a comeback by the Royals! Great to see both teams having total participation and involvement from all members.
Brown has changed her hair style since the last round so I didn't recognise her until you raised the point.
I was waiting for Radcliffe to say that his name is Daniel!
Bennett and Abramovich are the weak links on their respective teams. I think Abramovich lost points as many times as he gained points... and Bennett wasted time to act dramatically searching for answers that never came. Brown was the clear MVP
This was the University Physics and Literature Challenge because hardly anything else was asked in today's episode. A little boring to be honest (not the episode itself, but the selection of questions).
I prefer Brown’s “bee-hive” hairstyle😂
That was an unexpected result. Both Harvey & Radcliffe are good. Thank you Dave.
Thank you Dave. I consider this a bit of an upset, but the -5s proved to be Durham's undoing.
I adore Ms Brown’s voice
Then you'll love May McFettridge's lilting tones too.
25:39 was that a curse word I heard? 👀
I think she said "I feel like I don't know any"
I hear what you mean, but no. Amusingly it's prob. a confluence of vocalisations! (Tip: turn on the captions)
Hah! I wasn't expecting a question about Little Shop of Horrors! Love it
Excellent match with just the right amount of squirming and nail-biting coming from this armchair. Thank you so much, dear Dave!
Thanks again, Dave! New month, new meal theme, and this month's theme is comfort food! I turned 66 on March 3rd, so I was inspired to revisit the simple meals I've enjoyed throughout my life to date. For my fourth meal of the match for March, I'm having red beans and rice with anouille sausage and french bread! This is something traditionally served on Mondays in New Orleans. When I say 'comfort food' it doesn't get anymore comfortable than this meal for me. Eating it brings back so many wonderful memories. Enjoyed all this with a Barq's Root Beer! “Laissez les bon temps rouler!" About the match... ...We saw the first team through to an appearance in the Semifinals. Both teams were on a roll coming in to this match. Truly a clash of powerhouse teams. And IIRC it's somewhat rare to have two gender-balanced teams facing each other this late in the season.. Kudos to both teams on that score. The match was like two matches in one. The losing team raced out to a comfortable lead, then the winners found their stride. The questions were often designed to be misleading, and penalized the team that buzzed in early, thus negating their buzzer speed. The losing team were penalized 5 points for an incorrect answer on numerous occasions. As always, my best to all the members of both teams. And I wish each team member the best of success in their future endeavors! See you all next week!
Thanks, Dave! Hope you’re well. Rather an interesting game! Two well matched teams, as others have said, but I expected the outcome to be different. I don’t know if my brain has finally given up but tonight’s questions did not go my way at all! LOL!
Brown and Harvey are great.... Thanks for Posting, Dave. 😊
Bennet pretending she knows stuff but really doesn't 😂
A eso le llamo una remontada i love you brown
The venezuela answer 💀
@Kurt Taube True... sometimes I've noticed some teams get penalized even after the completion of the question. Just bad luck. There were enough clues prior to that to indicate El Salvador, and definitely enough to indicate that it was not Venezuela.
That was a close call on the penalty. Scully buzzed on the third-to-last word in the question, which JP completed.
Many thanks for this.
UC could do with having some sort of studio audience back. Exciting games like this one are somehow *less* exciting with only canned applause. Has Amol Rajan recorded his first episodes yet?
@Zaph Brox You're far from alone.
somehow I am so not looking forward to Amol Rajan
I think Durham will win their next match and advance
I think both teams are better than the game they played this time, but good on RH for turning it on late
